Meet Sian Jones: Building the Capability Behind the UK’s Nuclear Future

As Operational Capability Lead for our SMR (Small Modular Reactor) programme and our WANO (World Association of Nuclear Operators) Interface Manager, Sian Jones is helping shape what it takes to safely, efficiently and sustainably build a fleet of SMRs in North Wales.

Sian started her career in engineering before progressing through commissioning, reactor operations and nuclear leadership roles across the UK and the Middle East. Sian brings experience spanning the full nuclear lifecycle, from operating a reactor in the control room to leading operational and organisational capability programmes for future nuclear power stations. Sian combines technical expertise, operational insight and strategic leadership to support the successful delivery of the next generation of nuclear energy projects.

Creating the Building Blocks for Operational Excellence

At the heart of Sian’s role is developing a deep understanding of the systems, processes and capabilities required to build and operate SMRs successfully.

“It’s like solving a giant, multi-dimensional puzzle.

“Each piece represents a vital part of the future operating model, from workforce planning and digital infrastructure to asset management, regulatory compliance, commissioning and operational readiness. My role is about bringing those pieces together to create a safe, efficient and sustainable operating framework.”

The work is helping establish the standards, practices and capabilities that will enable future plants to operate reliably for generations to come.

From Control Rooms to Strategy Rooms

Having spent the early part of her career in hands-on engineering, commissioning, and nuclear operations, Sian brings a valuable practitioner perspective to strategic decision-making.

“My career began in hands-on engineering and plant operations, from supporting commissioning activities and working directly on plant systems to operating a reactor from the control room. Those experiences continue to shape how I approach leadership, decision-making, and the development of operational capability today.

“A typical day in my role at GBE-N combines creative thinking, critical analysis and operational insight. There is also a healthy dose of reading, colourful Post-it notes and planning sessions that start with a giant sheet of paper and plenty of scribbles. It’s organised chaos, but somehow it always leads to clarity.”

This blend of practical experience and strategic thinking helps ensure that operational realities remain at the centre of future planning.

Delivering Nuclear Differently

For Sian, one of the most exciting aspects of working at GBE-N is contributing to a programme that has the potential to transform how nuclear energy is delivered in the UK.

“We’re building future-ready systems that combine innovation, safety and sustainability to support the UK’s clean energy ambitions.

“Being part of a pioneering effort like this is incredibly exciting. I’m proud to be contributing my skills and experience to help turn complex challenges into practical solutions.”

The opportunity to help shape a new approach to nuclear delivery is creating an environment where new ideas and fresh thinking can thrive.

Building Capability for the Future

Sian’s work extends beyond developing operational frameworks. She is also passionate about helping grow the skills and expertise needed across the wider nuclear sector.

“It’s about more than generating electricity. We’re helping revitalise an industry that plays a critical role in the UK’s future. I’m particularly passionate about supporting and developing the next generation of nuclear professionals. By helping people gain the right skills, experience and mindset, we’re investing in both our energy security and our long-term resilience.”

More Than Scientists and Engineers

As someone who has worked across different areas of the nuclear sector, Sian is passionate about challenging common misconceptions about careers in nuclear.

“One of the biggest misconceptions is that a career in nuclear is only open to world-class physicists or scientists.

“In reality, it takes a huge range of skills to make a nuclear plant operate effectively. We need people working in maintenance, planning, training, operations, engineering, project delivery and many other disciplines. Every role plays an important part in delivering safe, reliable clean energy.”

With significant investment and growth taking place across the UK’s nuclear sector, Sian believes there has never been a better time to get involved.

“The growing nuclear industry in the UK creates fantastic opportunities for people looking to start their career, develop new skills or transition from another sector. It’s an exciting time to be part of an industry that is helping shape the country’s future.”

Learning Through Collaboration

One of the biggest lessons Sian has taken from her time at GBE-N is the importance of collaboration.

“My background in commissioning and generation gave me a strong operational foundation, but working on a programme of this scale has expanded my perspective.

“I’m proud to contribute my experience while continuing to learn from the diverse expertise around me. The best outcomes come when people bring different perspectives together to solve complex challenges.”

This collaborative culture continues to be one of the aspects of GBE-N she values most.

Building the Future Together

As GBE-N continues to develop its SMR programme, people like Sian are helping lay the foundations for long-term success.

By combining operational expertise, strategic thinking and a passion for developing future talent, she is helping create the capability needed to deliver clean, secure and reliable nuclear power for generations to come.

“We’re building something genuinely important. It’s exciting to be part of a team that is helping shape the future of nuclear energy in the UK.”
